"I love BJJ because… it combines so much that is enriching into one thing. It is great exercise, but at the same time fully mentally engaging and stimulating. It is combat, but you are also always sharing and reinforcing trust with your training partner. You gain a skill and confidence, but always find areas where you can develop and learn more and have to overcome."

Carl - Student

"I started my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey with Can Do Martial Arts two years ago at the age of 55. The benefits to me have been enormous; physically, I am more athletic and mentally more resilient to discomfort (and pain). I have consistently trained 2-3 times each week and never suffered a serious injury, though hard sparring does leave me sore (but that is not unique to me). What has been most surprising to me about training BJJ has been the mental and intellectual stimulation it provides; as a sport, it is often compared with chess, with participants forced to make tactical and strategic moves to win, and the comparison is certainly warranted. As a place to train BJJ, CDMA has proven to be extremely welcoming, and the quality of coaching is exceptional. Training partners, without exception, are friendly and considerate. Starting BJJ is not a trivial undertaking, but it can be life-changing, and if you are considering training in BJJ, Can Do Martial Arts is an outstanding place to begin."

Here is what some of our students have to say

Mark Raine - Student

'When I started BJJ I was thirty-nine, out of shape and very apprehensive. Have I left it too late? Am I too unfit? Am I going to get snapped up by a bunch of rough geezers with cauliflower ears?

'I needn't have worried. Ben, Terry and their students were welcoming and friendly and put me at ease right away as I threw myself into my first session. I collapsed into bed that night pleasantly tired but knowing I'd found something that would be challenging and rewarding in equal measures.

'Fast forward a year and a half and I'm now a Blue Belt. under Ben and Terry's expert eyes I have gained fitness, skills and confidence, and BJJ has also effected the rest of my life too - I feel positive, focused, disciplined and more assertive.

'One thing I especially like about BJJ is that it gives you a range of self-defence options that are absent in some arts, for example the ability to subdue an attacker without hurting them. This part of BJJ is overlooked at some sport-oriented clubs so I think it's great that it's still part of the curriculum at Can Do Martial Arts.

'I'd urge anyone that is thinking of coming along to jump in with both feet even if you're a bit scared. Your worries will quickly disappear and I'm confident that BJJ will have as much to offer you as it has me.

'See you on the Mat!'

Amanda - Student

"The supportive members, coaches and culture of CDMA means I have been able to learn BJJ safely, despite not always having the most natural instincts, and I have made many new friends. When I step onto the dojo mat the external pressures of life are put to the side to engage in the learning and physical exertion which is very stress relieving. The physical strength I have gained and ability to defend myself bring me confidence outside of the dojo and I have valued the many years I have been a member of CDMA".

Sean - Student

"I started training with Ben and Terry in 2021. Having tried BJJ twice before at two diffrent clubs; in 2017 for 6 months and in 2020 for 3 months before COVID lockdown. Due to the atmosphere at the two previous clubs, I decided that perhaps BJJ just wasn't for me.

I was 33 years old in 2021 and thought I would never get anywhere, as a 33 year old white belt in a combat sport as complex as BJJ. But, I hadn't trained with Ben, Terry or occasionally Phil before, so after one lesson, I knew I was onto a good thing! Two years and 2 months later I have earned my Blue Belt!

The reason I have committed to training for over two years is solely down to the two coaches Ben and Terry. Both coaches are incredibly Knowledgeable... and patient! And have bith worked hard to create a great, friendly and welcoming club! The atmosphere is the best thing about coming to training. The coaches have led by example and created a genuinely friendly team of people."

Dan - Student

"I have started my BJJ journey nearly 3 years ago. I have been always interested in the martial arts, self-defense and also wanted to improve my physical abilities. I must admit it has been an incredible experience throughout. The friendliness within the team is exceptional, with everyone being really helpful and looking after each other. It feels really great to be a part of the team. The extensive knowledge of our tutors has greatly improved my skills since the beginning and I'm looking forward to continue growing my BJJ game. I would like to recommend our club to anyone who wants to develop their confidence, physical abilities, grow as a martial artist and a better person."
